The challenge

Stamford Health’s pathology practice runs high volume: roughly 33,000 surgical accessions, 20,000 GYN cytologies, and 5,000 non-GYN cytologies a year across five pathologists and four Pathologists’ Assistants. The team leaned heavily on transcription and manual data entry, which slowed sign-out, strained staffing, and left room for error as CAP synoptic requirements grew. A looming move from Meditech to Epic Beaker raised the stakes. Nearby hospitals had struggled with the transition, and pathology could not afford to lose efficiency.

What changed

The lab adopted VoiceOver PRO® as its reporting layer, with custom templates and voice commands tuned to each pathologist’s style. Pathologists now work directly in the report with no transcriptionist in the loop. Because the templates and commands live in PRO rather than the AP system, they carried straight through the Epic Beaker go-live, with Voicebrook providing on-site and remote support during the transition.

The results

VoiceOver PRO delivered on every front the team worried about, and turned the Epic move from a risk into a proof point:

  • Up to 4 hours saved per pathologist, per day. Time returned to diagnosis instead of typing.
  • 60% faster CAP checklist completion, at 100% CAP eCP synoptic compliance.
  • Cost avoidance equal to 5+ additional staff. Efficiency that scales without hiring.
  • Seamless Epic Beaker transition. Because the templates and voice commands live in PRO, they carried straight through the go-live.
  • Better accuracy, flexibility, and work-life balance for pathologists and PAs alike.

Stamford’s story also makes a broader point: Epic Beaker alone is not enough for pathology. Epic handles enterprise integration, but it was not built for the specialty demands of the pathology report. VoiceOver PRO adds the pathology reporting layer on top, making Epic faster, more accurate, and more sustainable for the lab.

The Epic and VoiceOver combination is magnificent. It’s lightning fast.
